More dog bites in deprived areas

Here’s a BBC article on NHS statistics collected by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) about hospital admissions for animal bites. The key finding is the headline that rates of hospital admissions for dog bites are three times higher in the most deprived 10% of areas of England than in the least deprived 10%.

Perhaps the greater population density in very deprived areas plays a part as many more families, children (who are much more likely to be attacked) and dogs are crowded into public parks. Higher ownership of aggressive dogs for reasons of ‘status’ or as guard dogs could also be a factor.

Story here, statistics here.
