Premier League Poverty

Academic/blogger Alasdair Rae (often featured on this site) has used the data from our updated Indices of Deprivation to demonstrate the area deprivation of Premier League Football team home grounds. Overall they tend to be in relatively deprived areas – he notes that “more than half of all Premier League grounds are located in areas among the 20% most deprived”.

Here are a few examples:

Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium is in the most deprived area on the list, located in an LSOA in the 1% most deprived LSOAs in England.

Manchester United are based in more of a ‘mixed’ area.

Bournemouth has the least deprived location by far, being in the top 5% least deprived LSOAs.

Alasdair wrote a similar post about Premier League deprivation back in 2012. If you have a look you’ll see many of the teams still in the league are in the same quintile, although the LSOAs for West Ham, Norwich and Chelsea have all moved ‘up’ into a less deprived quintile.
