Are coastal areas more deprived?

The ONS analysed levels of deprivation in the 57 largest seaside destinations to determine whether these areas – typically former seaside resorts – suffer from higher levels of deprivation than the average. They found that overall larger seaside destinations were more deprived than the England average in 2007 and 2010, while mid sized destinations were less deprived, being more similar to the average in terms of deprivation patterns.

This adds to the national picture of area deprivation, as seaside destinations are similar to coalfield communities in that they feature places that historically relied on an industry that no longer exists to the same extent today.
