The North-South Divide – an animation
Here’s a post by Alasdair Rae about the idea of a North South divide in IMD 2010. He points out that while the most deprived LSOA in England was Jaywick, in Essex, the overall picture shows that deprivation, with the exception of London and some pockets of deprivation in the South, is mostly concentrated in large northern cities.
This also shows the urban vs rural element of deprivation, with the least deprived 10% taking up much more space on the map despite being the same number of LSOAs, as the ~1500 population sizes are spread over a much wider area.
Rae has also created an animation that starts at the 1% most deprived and goes up to 10% to map the location of the highest levels of deprivation.
