Deprivation and Road Safety in London

This Deprivation and Road Safety report for TFL’s London Road Safety Unit, by researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,  looks at the association between deprivation and road traffic injury in London.

They claim to have found a strong deprivation relationship, in particular for adult cyclists and adult and child pedestrians, stating that:

“adult pedestrians and child pedestrians in the most deprived areas of London remain 2.5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than their counterparts in the least deprived areas.”

Bear in mind the research appears to have been conducted in 2007 and used IMD2004 to examine results. It would be interesting to see how this relationship has changed since.
